An ecological correlate of critical flicker-fusion frequencies for some Anolis lizards.

چکیده
The maximum critical flicker-fusion frequency (CFF) was determined for seven species of anoline lizards. The congeners showed a wide range of CFF values from 26 to 42. These values correlated with the general level of insolation in each species’ microhabitat. such that the brighter the habitat. the higher the CFF.

The quick and the fast: the evolution of acceleration capacity in Anolis lizards.
Although of prime ecological relevance, acceleration capacity is a poorly understood locomotor performance trait in terrestrial vertebrates. No empirical data exist on which design characteristics determine acceleration capacity among species and whether these design traits influence other aspects of locomotor performance. In this study we explore how acceleration capacity and sprint speed have...

متن کاملThermal Biology and Temperature Selection in Juvenile Lizards of Co-occurring Native and Introduced Anolis Species
—Microhabitat selection is critical to thermoregulation in ectotherms, particularly in small-bodied organisms for which low thermal inertia can impose rapid acquisition of thermal equilibrium with the environment. Although thermal microhabitat selection is often included in studies of niche partitioning among lizard species these investigations typically address only adult thermoregulation and,...
متن کاملStick or grip? Co-evolution of adhesive toepads and claws in Anolis lizards.
Exploring the relationship between phenotype and performance in an ecological and evolutionary context is crucial to understanding the adaptive nature of phenotypic traits. Despite their ubiquity in vertebrates, few studies have examined the functional and ecological significance of claw morphologies. Here we examine the adhesive toepad and claw system of Anolis lizards. Claw characters are sig...
متن کاملAccumulation of transposable elements in Hox gene clusters during adaptive radiation of Anolis lizards.
Transposable elements (TEs) are DNA sequences that can insert elsewhere in the genome and modify genome structure and gene regulation. The role of TEs in evolution is contentious. One hypothesis posits that TE activity generates genomic incompatibilities that can cause reproductive isolation between incipient species. This predicts that TEs will accumulate during speciation events. Here, I test...
